Is Healing Linear?

Healing is often imagined as steady progress: fewer symptoms, more clarity, and feeling better over time. In real life, healing usually moves in waves. There may be days of insight, relief, and hope, followed by moments that feel like setbacks.

This does not mean therapy isn't working. It doesn't mean you are failing. It also doesn't mean you are all the way back at the beginning.

Sometimes things feel harder because we're becoming more aware. Patterns, emotions, needs, and relationship dynamics that once felt “normal” may start to feel uncomfortable. Awareness is an important part of healing, but it can also make things feel heavier before they feel easier.

Progress may look linear, but it's rare to make it 1-9 without any problems, interruptions, or restarts.

Other times, what we thought was the problem turns out to be only part of the problem. Therapy may help us uncover a deeper need, wound, fear, or pattern underneath the surface. Even when we have already made progress, we may need to slow down and return to the basics with this new understanding.

Healing can also feel difficult when old coping strategies stop working before new ones feel natural. Many coping skills begin as protection. Avoiding, pleasing, shutting down, overworking, distracting, or staying quiet may have helped us get through hard seasons. Letting go of those patterns takes time, especially when newer, healthier tools are still being practiced.

Relationships can also shift during healing. As we grow, we begin setting boundaries, communicating needs, or stepping away from dynamics that are harmful. Some relationships adjust and become healthier. Others may struggle with the change. This can be painful, even when the boundary is needed.

Healing isn't best measured by constant improvement. It's better measured by flexibility, awareness, self-compassion, and support. Moving forward doesn't mean never struggling again. It means noticing what's happening sooner, using tools more often, asking for help when needed, and treating yourself with more care along the way.

Progress includes hard days. Setbacks don't erase growth: They're part of the process.
